Title Honours Project: Sex differentiated diet of Subantarctic fur seals from the Tristan da Cunha Islands: overlap with fisheries?

I am currently a honours student within the Department of Zoology & Entomology, at the University of Pretoria. My supervisors are Dr Mia Wege and Prof Marthán N Bester. My honours project is based on whisker samples of Sub-Antarctic Fur Seals (Arctocephalus tropicalis) collected from the Tristan da Cunha Archipelago. We will be using these whisker samples, to collect stable isotope data. The stable isotope data will then help us determine the diets of male and female Sub-Antarctic Fur Seals at the Tristan da Cunha Archipelago. Furthermore, by analysing their diets we will be able to determine if there is conflict between fisheries and Sub-Antarctic Fur Seals. This study is relevant, due to the fact that there is barely any current data on the diet of Sub-Antarctic Fur Seals around the Tristan da Cunha Archipelago or on the diet of the male Sub-Antarctic Fur Seals. This study might also aid in the establishing of a Marine Protected Area around these Islands.
