Monica Leitner
MIMMP Technical & Research Officer

I’m an ecologist with interests broadly spanning ecosystem engineers, ecological processes and the biological impacts of global changes in landscapes and climate.  I completed my BSc Environmental Sciences, and postgraduate studies in Zoology at the University of Pretoria. My BSc Hons degree investigated the effects of termite mounds on invertebrate communities, while my MSc assessed nutrient cycling in African savannas and the effects of bush encroachment on this ecosystem process.

After my studies, I was involved with various invasion biology and ecology projects as a Technical Assistant and Project Coordinator in the Department of Zoology and Entomology, University of Pretoria. I was then fortunate enough to spend a year on Marion Island as an Environmental Conservation Officer 2018/19 (M75), which gave me experience in the ecological management and challenges of this remote sub-antarctic island.

My current position as a Technical and Research Officer involves providing administrative, technical and research support for the Marion Island Marine Mammal Programme (MIMMP).
